About Mary Rafferty

Mary Rafferty portrait format

As an ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC), accredited  mediator, and experienced leadership trainer, I help leaders, teams, and organizations move from frustration and firefighting to calm, confident, and connected performance.
For two decades, I’ve supported professionals in the public and private sectors to build genuine trust, handle tough conversations, and create working environments where teams flourish, even during complex or stressful times.
The last five years, my primary focus has been coaching and training leaders to develop practical skills for real-world challenges: navigating conflict, leading change, inspiring accountability, and fostering psychological safety.

My approach is grounded in relational leadership—drawing on advanced study with Relational Change and their Self–Other–Situation model. Simply put, I believe that the quality of our relationships – with ourselves, with others, and with our wider context – is what drives every effective team and leader. This lens is woven into every coaching, training, and facilitation programme I deliver, helping clients achieve genuine, lasting transformation.

In practice, this means we work together to build real awareness of your own patterns, understand and connect with those around you, and respond thoughtfully to the situation at hand—so you lead with trust, presence, and impact every day.

‘‘In organizations real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles and positions.”

Margaret Wheatley – Leadership and the New Science

Alongside my independent work, I also serve as a Leadership Coach & Facilitator with the Mindful Leader Academy, supporting leaders in both the business and medical devices sectors. I’m also a member of the Department of Education’s Coaching for School Leaders panel. This wide-ranging experience keeps me connected to real-world leadership challenges—from executive teams in industry to leaders in education—and continuously broadens my perspective.
In addition to my coaching and facilitation work, I’ve spent more than 15 years training, mentoring, and assessing professionals to become Certified Level mediators and as a former member of the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland Council played a central role in helping to set national standards for mediation training and assessment. This experience gives my work a strong foundation in best practice, clarity, and integrity
